Summary0005700: Excel to jCatalog import wizard included with Corporate, Team and Partner editions
Description

A new import utility ships with the Corporate, Team and Partner editions. It converts database metadata held in an Excel workbook (a list of tables and columns, optionally with schema/catalog and relationships) into a CaseTalk jCatalog that can then be imported into a model.

The wizard guides you step by step:

  • Pick the .xls/.xlsx file and worksheet (a preview grid shows the data).
  • Map the columns to roles: which column holds the table/path, the column name, the column title (used as a description), and optionally a catalog or schema.
  • Decode how table names are structured (e.g. schema prefixes, and separators that indicate composition or association between tables).
  • Shape the result: keep path-qualified names or normalise them, ignore case, de-duplicate columns, and derive foreign keys.

While you work, a live Entity-Relationship diagram of the result is shown on the right. You can pan it, zoom it, and rearrange it by dragging tables; double-click fits it to the window.

On finishing, the utility:

  • Writes the .jcatalog (UTF-8, so accented names import correctly).
  • Saves all of your choices AND the diagram arrangement next to the file, so the next run (or another spreadsheet of the same shape) reuses them.
  • Exports a full-resolution PNG of the diagram with readable labels.
  • Opens the output folder.

It is launched from the Start Menu entry 'XLS to jCatalog' after installation.
